hello,
to my mind , the translation of the sentence :-we met at the port-
-nous sommes rencontrés au port-
but,the true translation is:
-nous nous sommes rencontrés au port.
I don't know what
Any suggestion
thanks.

Hello.
Sometimes an intransitive verb in English is translated by a pronomial verb in French. "Meet" is one of these verbs.

Hello!
The verb "meet" in french is a pronominal verb, wich means "se rencontrer". In your sentence, the suject is "nous". After, the "se" (from the pronominal verb) becomes "nous" because the persons who are concerned are 'we'. The "se" is traduce, in order by: me, te, se, nous, vous, se.
Sorry if you don't understand, I do like I can.

Hello,
But,if we consider the sentence:-I meet ahmed at the port-
the translation of 'meet' would be :-je suis rencontré ahmed au port-
So.here meet=rencontrer and not se rencontrer.
Thanks.

Hello,
THanks for all the answers.
As regards my question, the write explanation is that the meaning of meet deponds on type of sentences.

if you say :I meet ahmed at the port. the translation would be :je rencontre ahmed au port."nous nous somme rencontré au port " is a sentence which is write with a past tense .that's why there are two "nous" .sorry if you don't understand

Hello,
No, It's not because the sentence is on the past that you have the second 'nous', it's because you haven't the "direct object" 'ahmed' : it depends if 'meet' is used as transitiv verb or intransitiv verb ...
You can say :
I meet my brother at the port : je rencontre mon frère au port
I met my brother at the port : j'ai rencontré mon frère au port
we met at the port : nous nous sommes rencontrés au port
we meet at the port each sunday : nous nous rencontrons au port tous les dimanches
... for us (french) it's the verb 'met' which is strange : we want to say "we meet eachother ..."
