Bonjour
Idea of Progress
Introduction :
We studied the theme of “Idea of progress”. First of all I would like to give a defintion of Progress. A Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in terms of sciences, technology, modernization, living condition, etc. We studied a cartoon in English book (p62) wich is a caricature of progress and analyzed a extract of movie “Gattaca” and text “Human Possibilities” by Andrew Niccol in 1997.
We can ask if the idea of progress is dangerous for humans.
In a first part, I will talk about the positive points of the progress. Then in a second part , I will talk about the negative points of progress.
On the one hand, I think progress is essential to evolve. Thanks to advances in sciences, medicine has become much more efficient and accessible. For example, in a cartoon of the English book, the scene takes place in a imaginary factory in wich perfect people and cloned . Moreover, in movie “Gattaca” the scene takes place at a geneticist's office wherethe genetic engineering allows a couple to have another baby and choose “ideal” characteristics (gender, eye and hair) . Indeed, the cloning has postive aspects because he allows to remove pathologies and diseases.
On the other hand, progress can be dangerous if not controlled or used for bad. In the movie « Gattaca », science and technology have led to a world without emotions, without values and whiteout freedom. Many debates arise about the progress of science as : « Should parents be able to choose their baby’s gender ? » as in the movie . Moreover it creates competition between natural, imperfect people and genetically-engineered people as Vincent and Anton. Vincent was conceived naturally and Anton the younger brother was conceived by science. Indeed in a cartoon the negative points that we see that there is less diversity and the science can create a monsters.
Conclusion :
To concluse, I’d say progress is neither all good or all bad. Put into the hands of human beings, that knowledge can be used for medicine or great advances. It’s not scientific knowledge that is either good or evil, but the use of it. But we could ask ourselves the following question : Where are the limits of progress ?
